Driessen does not understand Ward’s upcoming appointment: ‘He is also third choice’

| by NielsOpdam

Valentijn Driessen and Johan Derksen find the upcoming appointment of Julian Ward at Ajax incomprehensible. They will tell you that on Wednesday evening Inside today. Ward seems to be the new director of football affairs in Amsterdam and will reportedly start his new job on July 1.

‘Gerry Hamstra leaves and then Julian Ward comes’, Driessen begins his story. ‘No one has ever heard of him. He is in his thirties, is with Liverpool and has to help Ajax on top.’ Derksen thinks it is a ‘ridiculous decision’ by the Amsterdam club. “It’s a really funny decision. A man who knows absolutely nothing about Dutch culture, who has no network here… You need that in his position.’ Driessen also finds the decision incomprehensible. He is also the third choice. How the hell do you get to a guy like that?’

Derksen thinks that all departments at Ajax are occupied by lightweights. According to him, the Supervisory Board has let things get completely out of hand. ‘They took the departure of Marc Overmars far too lightly, because then the important man fell away due to his own behaviour. Then they are like: The director Van der Sar catches that for a while. Director Van der Sar does not catch anything at all. He has been failing for years and is totally unfit for that position.’

“If Heitinga did well, he could stay”

It is also unclear whether trainer John Heitinga will be allowed to stay at Ajax after this season. “If he did well, he could stay,” says Driessen, who thinks that Ajax should win at least one prize. But he no longer wins the Eredivisie. They only have the KNVB Cup left.’ Derksen thinks that Van der Sar should have approached Peter Bosz for the trainer’s post at Ajax. Driessen agrees and sees another position for the former trainer. ‘Peter Bosz could have just become technical director. That could have been fine, but they are all ineligible.’
