Curti: With Derek Carr, Saints are favorites in the NFC South

According to multiple sources, Derek Carr chose the New Orleans Saints as his new home starting in 2023. Ian Rapoport later brought the information that the contract is for four years and, honestly, then we’ll see how the contractual issue and the cap of the Saints – who, as you may know, weren’t in the best position in the galaxy.

Anyway, New Orleans takes advantage of an interesting situation for itself. It’s not a mid- and long-term solution like “we’re going to win the Super Bowl” or become the first shelf in the NFL as they were in Drew Brees’ time. But the division was giving soup. Let’s face it: as much as Carolina has a pretty decent roster, it’s one of the other three teams in the NFC South that doesn’t have an alternative at the quarterback position.

New Orleans now does. Derek Carr, as much as you might turn your nose up at him, is better than Desmond Ridder, PJ Walker and Kyle Trask. Most likely we won’t see these three names as starting quarterbacks for Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa. But will we see anyone much better than Carr?

It is difficult. Both Atlanta and Carolina are now holding on to Lamar Jackson’s hope via trade – and for that to happen, a lot of other things need to happen first. The possibility exists, but it is far from being a really credible dream at this point. Not even the franchise tag has been placed on Lamar yet. Aaron Rodgers would pass away from both teams, most likely. With Jimmy Garoppolo in one of the two, he wouldn’t think New Orleans would lose that potential favoritism either.

It’s true that Derek Carr was an intercepting machine last season. But in the last four seasons he has rated above 55 in all; By contrast, the Saints have been among the league’s bottom 10 in passing yards per game and passing completion percentage since Drew Brees retired.

New airs, for Derek Carr, may be enough. Still, he’ll have on the other side a defense he never had on the Raiders. Defensive unity wasn’t New Orleans’ problem in Season 22. Offense, of course, was—as it should be when Andy Dalton is their starter. Carr is the quarterback on the team that, in my opinion, has the best defense in the NFC South – arguably the best QB in the division. This, considering that the other teams still have a hazy future in the most important position in the game, is enough for favoritism.

Which isn’t to say the New Orleans fan has to get drunk on dreams. This is not a signing that puts the team in contention for the title and the team’s salary cap situation should follow the best style of the Brazilian economy before the Real Plan. But life is made of small victories too. At least that’s what we have in Louisiana right now.
