Culleredo Chess School (A Coruña) is born as an intergenerational social initiative

The Xadrez Culleredo School was born as a social initiative open to people of all ages. The club, which carries out its activity in Vilaboa, has managed to gather around thirty members in two months and wants to become a social meeting point beyond its recreational purpose.

The Council of Culleredo and private sponsors collaborated in the birth of this initiative that brings chess closer to the residents of the municipality, both young and old. “”It’s wonderful to see them play with each other, sharing board and exchanging knowledge“, says the president of the Escola Jadrez Culleredo – Carpintería Ferreño, José Antonio Ferreño, in this regard.

The person in charge of the club points out that more and more people are interested in this initiative that takes place in the municipal offices of Villa Melaniain Vilaboa. The doors of these facilities are open any day to practice and, in addition, on Saturdays there is an official competition.

The club, which is federated, has started the competition in the third division. The president assures that his objective is to promote to be able to be in the second division next year and create new teams in the third. Another goal is the organization of a big tournament in Culleredo, attracting players to
even national and international level, as well as consolidating the competition that premiered at the end of December in Vilaboa, with high participation.

The mayor, José Ramón Rioboo, has congratulated those responsible for the school for their “successful initiative” and guarantees the “maximum support” of the Council. Rioboo attended the entity’s first competition in December, where he was able to verify “the excellent idea” of promoting chess in Culleredo.
