FRISCO, Texas – Plain and simple, the Cowboys are under the cap again, with some room to spare.
With the push of a button or two, the Cowboys restructured a pair of contracts — Dak Prescott’s and Zack Martin’s — saving nearly $30 million in salary cap savings for 2023.
Dak’s reworking of the deal should cut about $22 million off next year’s hard cap. Martin’s newly worked deal doles out around $8 million.
In doing so, the Cowboys aren’t adding years to the contracts, but are essentially modifying his base salary and dividing it into a prorated bonus to be spread over the next four years.
Dak was expected to have more than $49 million in cap next year, including a base salary of $31 million. This restructuring only moves money out of this base, which is now down to about $2 million.
The Cowboys will likely do the same with a couple of other players in the coming days before the start of free agency next week.
The Cowboys were reportedly about $16 million over the limit, but could be close to $25-30 million under the limit by next Wednesday, the start of the new league year.
