CDMX is the most indebted entity for the fifth consecutive year – El Sol de México

At the end of 2022, and for the fifth consecutive year, Mexico City was the most country in debtwith a balance of 98 thousand 937 million pesos, according to the Center for Public Finance Studies (CEFP).

This amount represents approximately 15 percent of all subnational debt (loans contracted by states, municipalities or local public entities with private banks and development, or through the issuance of bonds in the stock market), which at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022 was around 684 thousand 395.8 million pesos.

In the case of the country’s capital, the CEFP cIt calculates that if the entity’s debt were divided among all its inhabitants, each one would have to pay about 11,000 pesos.

Salvador Soto, academic at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)explained that the acquisition of debt of a state, country or company it is not negative, as long as it is used in long-range projects.

In the case of a country, state or municipality, he stressed that if it is used properly, it allows promoting the economic growth, the expert stressed. “Problems arise when the state faces financial imbalancess due to a drop in income, which requires a reallocation of expenses”, he warned.

NL, WITH MORE DEBT PER CAPITA

The study of CEFP, of the Chamber of Deputies, also revealed that at the end of 2022, Nuevo León was the federal entity with the highest amount of debt per inhabitant or debt per capita.

The calculations of CEFP They point out that only from October to December of last year, each inhabitant of Nuevo León had to pay about 17 thousand 112 pesos for the debt that was contracted.

This amount is 11.74 percent higher than the same period in 2021, when the state’s per capita debt amounted to 15,313 pesos.

According to the debt total of Nuevo León, a balance at the end of the fourth quarter of 98 thousand 575.3 million pesoswith which it positioned itself as the second most indebted state in the country.

In addition to Mexico City and Nuevo León, the State of Mexico, Chihuahua and Veracruz accounted for approximately 52.6 percent of all subnational debt between October and December of last year, concluded the CEFP.
