Basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki didn’t bring luck to the Hamburg Towers. Under the eyes of the former NBA star, coach Benka Barloschky’s team lost their Bundesliga game against Baskets Bamberg 83-88 (48-45).
The 44-year-old Nowitzki, who ended his career in 2019 after ten years with the Dallas Mavericks, was one of 3,400 spectators in the Inselparkhalle. The former international was surrounded by countless fans before and after the game, willingly and graciously signing autographs and being available for selfies.
Nowitzki stayed in Hamburg for advertising shots and then accepted the invitation from Towers Managing Director Marvin Willoughby to the BBL meeting in Wilhelmsburg.

There the “Sportsman of the Year 2011” saw how the home side fell behind in the first quarter, but then improved significantly. After an 11-0 run, the hosts were suddenly in front. In the further course until the break, both teams acted almost on an equal footing, but in the end it was enough for the Hanseatic League to take a narrow lead.
It was a tight game in the third period as well. In the meantime, the Towers pulled away to 67:62, but gave up the lead again. In the final quarter, Bamberg proved to be the more effective team. Jordan Davis, new signing from the Spanish first division club UCAM Murcia, scored 20 points on his debut for the Hanseatic League and was also a successful thrower for his team.
