Not every expert in England could understand Manchester United’s last-minute transfer. United legend Rio Ferdinand has now defended the deal with the Austrian from Bayern Munich – and accused critics of being clueless.
“I’m absolutely thrilled about the signing,” said the former Red Devils defender on his YouTube channel. Ferdinand emphasized: “If I were looking for a short-term replacement for Eriksen, Sabitzer would be the player I would get.” It was only announced a few hours before the deal that Christian Eriksen would be out for several months.
The Austrian was an essential part of Leipzig’s success. “Yes, he went to Bayern and didn’t manage to become a regular there, but the players he stands behind are big, well-known names.”
Ferdinand also reacted directly to Paul Merson, who had criticized the transfer. “To me, that stinks of someone who hasn’t seen him play. This guy knows how to play football,” the former England international revealed.
Merson had the obligation Sky Sports referred to as “panic buying”. The former Arsenal striker also described Sabitzer as a “fourth-rate player”. Sabitzer did not make it into the starting eleven in Munich, was far from it.
