Marking the anniversary of the Russian invasion, Ukraine on Friday issued a postage stamp featuring a mural by British street artist Banksy.

The work, depicting a boy beating an adult in judo, was made by Banksy on a demolished wall in a Ukrainian town reduced to rubble by Russian bombing. It refers to Vladimir Putin, black belt in judo, beaten by Ukraine, weaker than him, a sort of allegory of the fight between David and Goliath. The phrase “Get lose, Putin” was added to the stamp.

Ukrainians, very grateful for the standpoint of the British artist who had thrown increased spotlight on the conflict, flocked to buy the new stamps at the main post office in Kiev’s central square, the Maidan.

The British street artist had made several works in the ruins of Ukrainian cities in 2022. Two other of his drawings notably showed two children using a metal siphon as a seesaw, as well as a female gymnast balancing on the rubble of a damaged building.
