Lionel Messi (34) and FC Barcelona – for a long time this combination was considered inseparable. Until the summer of 2021. Then the Argentine decided to leave Barça after 21 (!) Years.
In tears, the superstar announced his departure from the Catalans at a press conference. Just a few days later, he signed a contract with top French club Paris Saint-Germain.
But even then, Messi, who had become world champion with Argentina in winter, explained that leaving Barça was not planned at all. “I came back to Barcelona to prepare for the season. […] I wanted to sign my contract and start training immediately because I thought everything was settled and only my signature was missing on the contract,” he explained after his PSG move.
But Barça – already financially ailing at the time – could no longer fulfill the superstar’s horrendous wishes – certainly not the requirements of the Spanish League Association. Messi couldn’t sign a new contract, had to leave.
But shortly after his departure, there were rumors of his return. Messi is closely associated with the Mediterranean metropolis and has long announced his return: “If I end my career, I will return to Barcelona, it’s my home.”

Background to the whole thing: Messi’s contract with PSG expires after the season. At the beginning of the year, it was said from Paris that an extension was only a matter of form. Nothing has happened since then. Recently it was even said that Messi had changed his mind and was tending to leave in the summer. That had the rumor mill seething.
Does he go or does he stay? It seems certain that there will probably not be a Messi return for the time being.
