Trabzonspor defeated FC Basel in the intermediate round of the Conference League on an emotional evening. The Turkish club was 1-0 too strong for the Swiss in its own stadium on Thursday. In the Europa League, Bayer Leverkusen lost to AS Monaco, partly due to a special own goal by goalkeeper Lukas Hrádecky: 2-3.
The match between Trabzonspor and FC Basel was dominated by the major earthquake disaster in Turkey. Trabzonspor donates the proceeds from the sale of the nearly 40,000 tickets to the survivors. More than 40,000 deaths have already been reported in the country.
Before the start of the game, a large banner was unveiled in the stands with an image of a rescuer pulling a baby from under the rubble. Many flags of other Turkish clubs also flew in the stadium, with the message: “We will all be together.”
Danish defender Jens Stryger Larsen scored the goal in the 65th minute for Trabzonspor, where the Dutchmen Stefano Denswil and Dogucan Haspolat had a starting place. Naci Ünüvar remained on the reserve bench. At Basel, Wouter Burger participated until the eightieth minute.
The return in Switzerland is next Thursday. The winner qualifies for the Round of 16 of the Conference League. AZ comes into action for the first time. As group winner, the Alkmaarders are exempt for the intermediate round.
National champion Trabzonspor will not play in the Turkish league for the time being. The Süper Lig has been shut down due to the earthquake disaster. Hatayspor and Gaziantep FK have withdrawn from the competition. The two clubs are located around the earthquake’s epicenter.
Goalkeeper Leverkusen makes a mistake
Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-3 against AS Monaco in the intermediate round of the Europa League. Hrádecky took care of a quick deficit by working the ball into his own goal under pressure from striker Breel Embolo.
Leverkusen came back into the game, partly due to an assist from Jeremie Frimpong. But in the end, the Monegasken triumphed through a goal in stoppage time from Axel Disasi.
Juventus came no further than 1-1 against Nantes, while Sporting CP drew with the same figures against FC Midtjylland. Earlier in the evening, Red Bull Salzburg beat AS Roma (1-0), while Shakhtar Donetsk was too strong for Stade Rennais (2-1). FC Barcelona and Manchester United were evenly matched (2-2).
PSV suffered a painful 3-0 loss on a visit to Sevilla, partly due to hits from former Ajax players Lucas Ocampos and Nemanja Gudelj. Ajax played a goalless draw against Union Berlin in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
