This is how the ATP ranking remains after the Rio de Janeiro Tournament: where is Alcaraz?

Carlos Alcaraz was on the verge of winning his second title of the season in the Rio de Janeiro Tournament and rising to world number one barely a month after losing the throne to Novak Djokovic after the Serbian’s victory in the Australian Open, where Alcaraz was unable to play due to injury.

Alcaraz’s defeat in the final in Rio de Janeiro allows Djokovic to continue for another week as world number one with 6,980 points, despite giving up 90 points achieved at the Dubai tournament last year. In this way ‘Nole’ manages to surpass the absolute record of weeks as number one held by the German Steffi Graf.

An Alcaraz who could have matched Djokovic on points if he had won the title in Rio but who finally added 300 points as a finalist (he lost the 500 the week before as Rio champion in 2022) to stay in second position with 6,780 points. The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas completes the podium with 5,805 points, ahead of the Norwegian Casper Ruud, fourth with 5,515.

The American Taylor Fritz stars in the main novelty this week in the Top-10 with his rise to fifth position with 3,660 points taking advantage of the setback of Andrey Rublev, who lost 455 points from the title achieved last year in Dubai to now be sixth with 3,405 points, ahead of his compatriot Daniil Medvedev, seventh with 3,320.

Another of the main victims this week in the ranking is Rafael Nadal, who this week has lost 500 points as champion of the Acapulco tournament last year and appears in eighth position with 3,315 points. In this way, Nadal’s presence in the Top-10 is threatenedsince the Spaniard leads Felix Auger-Aliassime by 70 points (ninth with 3,245 points), Holger Rune by 154 (tenth with 3,161) and by barely 250 points Hubert Hurkacz who this week appears at the gates of the Top- 10 with 3,065 points.

This week’s ranking also leaves us, in addition to the presence of Pablo Carreño in the Top-20 and Roberto Bautista in the Top-30, the entry into the Top-30 of Alejandro Davidovich; the best historical ranking of Bernabé Zapata with his rise of 21 positions to position 42 after reaching the semifinals in Rio; and Andy Murray’s approach to the Top-50 of the ranking after climbing 18 places to 52nd place.
