Manchester City have been accused by the Premier League of breaking financial fair play rules – more than 100 times over nine seasons. The case will be forwarded to a commission independent of the league of the English competition, which will investigate possible violations by the team in the competition.

In a statement released this Monday (06), the PL confirmed that several accusations, between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons, were forwarded to an independent commission after the conclusion of an investigation that lasted four years.

“In accordance with Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club to a Commission under Rule W.3.4 da Premier League.”

Manchester City are accused of breaching league financial rules which require “best faith” to disclose information “which gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”. The team can be punished with loss of points, prohibition to make new signings, condemnation to pay debts with the league or even expulsion from the Premier League.

Still in the statement, the Premier League cites a series of violations that the team would have dribbled during the nine seasons. In addition, the entity points out inaccuracies in information about club revenues and operating costs.

Regarding the inaccuracies, the PL indicates that it will investigate alleged violations in detailing the payment of team coaches, between 2009/10 and 2012/13, in addition to problems in the remuneration of players, between 2010/11 and 2015/16.

It is worth noting that, unlike when the club successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the Champions League ban, this option is not available. Premier League rules prevent CAS from intervening on this occasion.

At this time, the independent commission will still be appointed by PL, which will work “confidentially” until the end of the investigations. The results will be published in the future on the entity’s website, which will no longer manifest itself on the subject.
