The Port of Barcelona stands out as a hub for the supply of the Balearic Islands

The Barcelona Port Authority (spain) has become a hub for the supply of the Balearic Islands. In fact, in 2022, the traffic between the Balearic Islands and the Catalan port has had a very significant growth, with positive results in scales, passengers and Intermodal Transport Units.

Until now, the Catalan enclave has three companies that regularly connect Barcelona with the ports of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. These are Balearia, the Grimaldi Group, which bought the ships and service rights from Trasmediterranea in 2022, and GNV, which began operating between Barcelona and the Balearic Islands in July 2021.

During the last year the number of calls has been improving, for example Balearia has managed a total of 1,097 calls, which represents an increase of 13.2%, and GNV has received a total of 644 calls, which represent a growth of 232%.

In turn, Trasmed has received a total of 826 stopovers, lowering its activity by 7.2%. Compared to the calls made in 2019, before Covid, those of Balearia have grown by 8.4% and those of Trasmed have decreased by 31.2%.

Once the restrictions ended, passenger traffic experienced a recovery in 2021 that intensified in 2022, when they reached 1,140,263 passengers, 42.5% more than in 2021, and 34.3% more than in 2019.

The figures reveal that the port of Barcelona has become the hub for the supply of the Balearic Islands, operating above all in refrigerated traffic. Another important traffic is that of dangerous goods, for which Trasmed has chartered a ro-ro ship with two weekly services.

On the other hand, the board of directors of the Barcelona Port Authority has started the bidding process to install an electrical substation that will be used as the main node of the network to electrify the docks of the enclave.
