ATP Ranking – A record 378th week in history: Djokovic, the longest reign

Djokovic alone in the world, Alcaraz is getting closer

He was sure to achieve it, even though Carlos Alcaraz had defended his title in Rio and was level on points. Novak Djokovic is officially the tennis player, women’s and men’s circuits combined, to have remained on the throne the longest. World number 1 for a 378th career week, he surpasses the previous record set by Steffi Graf (377 weeks). A status that he will have the opportunity to consolidate this week in Dubai where he resumes competition.

The Serb has certainly seen his margin shrink: finalist in Rio de Janeiro, Alcaraz is only 200 small points behind him. But the young Spaniard injured his right thigh on Brazilian clay and his participation in Acapulco is uncertain. In March, he will also have a lot of points to defend in Indian Wells and Miami (1360 exactly), which could allow Djokovic (even without playing) to extend his reign a little more.

Fritz in the Top 5, worthy heir to Roddick

It’s one of the events of the week: an American is once again among the top five players in the world. US tennis had not known this for almost 14 years (week of September 7, 2009) and Andy Roddick. Taking advantage of the withdrawal of points from Andrey Rublev’s title in Dubai last year, Taylor Fritz overtook the Russian and joined the Top 5 for the first time in his career. However, this joy could be fleeting since he himself will have a trophy and 1000 points to defend in the Californian desert.

Also note that Daniil Medvedev continues to rise. Thanks to his second title in two weeks in Doha, the Russian is now 7th just behind his compatriot Rublev. He also benefits from the misfortunes of Rafael Nadal who, still injured, abandons the capital acquired in Acapulco last year (where he had been crowned) and slips two places (8th). Thanks to his title in Rio, Cameron Norrie regains a place (12th) at the expense of Jannik Sinner. This is the only other change in the Top 20.

Bonzi and Murray rebound

Unlucky finalists, Benjamin Bonzi and Andy Murray are nevertheless reaping the rewards of their respective careers in Marseille and Doha. The Frenchman thus doubles 15 of his colleagues to settle in 45th place, which makes him the number 2 tricolor behind Richard Gasquet (43rd). For his part, the Scotsman has the Top 50 in his sights with 18 places won (52nd), even if he decided to withdraw from Dubai so as not to pull the rope too much. The progression of the week is finally to be credited to the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, semi-finalist in Rio, who now displays the registration number 42 (+21 places).

Wawrinka finds the Top 100, Fils is not far from it

Finally, Stan Wawrinka was proud of it when he learned of it last week: here is the triple Grand Slam winner among the 100 best (97th, +8). For a player of his standing, this may seem trivial, but it is above all a sign that his work is bearing fruit. Returning to competition last spring after a year’s absence (left foot injury), he was in 361st place at the start of May 2022. His executioner in the quarter-finals in Marseille, the promising Arthur Fils, continues to rise on his side. . He is only a stone’s throw from this famous Top 100 (104th, +14) at only 18 years old.
