Sosa, Pérez, Rodríguez and Peña lead the table tennis qualifying round

SANTO DOMINGO. Alexander Pérez and Dafne Sosa, in U-15, as well as Cristopher Rodríguez and Cintia Peña, in U-19, were leaders in both branches and categories in the second national Table Tennis eliminatory held over the weekend at the Pabellón de that discipline of the Parque del Este.

Pérez, from Santiago, beat his compueblano Alexander Tejeda 3 sets to 2, in a spectacular comeback after going down 0-2 on the scoreboard in the U-15 men’s final.

In the women’s category, Dafne Sosa, from San Pedro de Macorís, beat Arianna Estrella, from Santiago, 3-0, who occupies the third qualifying position. The second rung of the female U-15 corresponds to Nicol Guerrero, from San Pedro de Macorís.

The purpose of the qualifying tournament is to form the teams that will represent the country in the Caribbean Table Tennis Children’s-Youth Championship to be held from March 27 to April 2 of this year in Guyana.

Those selected will be defined in the third and last call that will be scheduled by the Dominican Table Tennis Federation (Fedoteme) on a date to be defined.

“In this second round we have seen the growth and the work that the associations are doing. We are in the process of developing great talent”, said Dr. Daniel Landrón, president of Fedoteme.

In U-19, Cintia Peña from Santiago dominated in the female branch, with 14 points. The second place was occupied by the vegan Vianelkis Fernández, with 13 points, and the third place fell to Valerin Hernández, from Monte Plata, with 12 points.

In the U-19 male category, Rodríguez from Santiago dominated with 10 points, followed by Joel Mendoza, from Santo Domingo, with nine points, and Andrés Lora, from Santo Domingo, with eight goals.

In the U-15 children’s category, eight players advanced in each branch, while in the U-19 women’s category seven qualified, and in the men’s category six advanced.

The head of Fedoteme thanked the support of the Ministry of Sports, the Dominican Olympic Committee and the Group Creating Olympic Dreams (Creso).
