Sergio García attacks McIlroy: “He lacks maturity”

The fracture in the world of golf is more than evident. PGA Tour members on one side, LIV Golf members on the other. Darts are launched week after week, and the last to star in a hookup have been two European golf institutions so far this century: Rory McIlroy and Sergio García. Gone is the great friendship they reaped after a good handful of Ryder Cups sharing interests (Rory was best man at Sergio’s wedding), and now the relationship between Northern Irish and Spanish is non-existent.

A few days ago, McIlroy revealed that he had deleted Sergio’s contact during the last US Open, after the Spaniard wrote to him. “He basically told me to shut up about the LIV, and blah blah blah…” revealed the Northern Irishman, one of the most active players in the fight against the Saudi circuit. Months before, the current FedExCup champion already stated that his relationship with the golfers who have signed for LIV is null. “I don’t have much of a relationship with them. His best days are behind him.” commented.

The response from the man from Castellón was not long in coming and, before the first event of the LIV Golf season, Sergio attacked his former friend. “I think it is very sad, we have done many things together and we have had too many experiences for him to end it just because I have gone to another circuit. He does not seem very mature to me, I really see a lack of maturity ”, the Spaniard told The Telegraph before starting to compete in Mayakoba. “Rory has his life and makes his own decisions, just like I do. I respect his choices, but it seems like he doesn’t respect mine,” he continued.

Despite this, García wanted to leave a door open to a good atmosphere. “Of course, I have no problem with him. He is the one with the problem. So if he wants to reconcile, I’m willing to talk. But I’m not sure he’ll get to that level”, affirmed a Sergio who finds it very difficult to be in the Ryder Cup in Rome, where he would have to share a team with McIlroy again. “I wouldn’t want to damage the atmosphere of the team. I love that event too much for that to happen.” The waters go down in turmoil in golf.

Loose start of the Spanish in Mayakoba

This Friday, the second season of LIV Golf kicked off in Mayakoba, a paradisiacal Mexican course that used to appear on the PGA Tour. The first round of the tournament did not go too well for the Spanish, who suffered from the changing wind coming in from the sea. Sergio García finished the first of the three laps with +1 on his card weighed down by a disastrous start, while David Puig and Eugenio López-Chacarra appear in the back places with +3 and +5, respectively.

After 18 holes and with two days to go, Englishman Paul Casey and American Jason Kokrak share the lead at Mayakoba with -6 (first day of 65 strokes). Just one hit away is a chasing group in which is the Mexican Abraham Ancer, and other favorites like Dustin Johnson, with -3, or Cameron Smith (-2) keep their options alive.
