NFL: Russell Wilson would have asked for the dismissal of Pete Carroll in Seattle

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson lobbied for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll to be fired ahead of his departure from Seattle, reported The Athletic Friday.

So that’s another example of the tension that existed between Wilson and the Seahawks during his 10-year tenure with the team.

According to what advances The AthleticWilson asked Seahawks owners in February 2022 to fire Carroll and general manager John Schneider in hopes the team would hire Sean Payton as their new head coach.

Instead, Wilson was traded to the Broncos in March in return for including several first- and second-round picks and quarterback Drew Lock, who served as backup to Geno Smith when the Seahawks reached the playoffs in 2022. The Broncos then gave Wilson a five-year, $245 million contract extension, 165 of which is guaranteed.

The Broncos, however, had a miserable season in 2022 with a 5-12 record, which led to the firing of first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett and the subsequent arrival of Payton to replace him.

A lawyer for Wilson denied that the quarterback called for Carroll and Schneider to be fired, describing the information as “entirely fabricated.” The Seahawks declined to comment to The Athletic.
