Manchester City Subject to Financial Sanctions, Pep Guardiola Resigns Because of Lied!?

Guardiola vowed to leave if Cityzens broke financial rules…

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has previously said he would quit as coach if he felt the club lied to him.

The Cityzens are in the midst of a crisis after being charged by the Premier League for multiple breaches of financial regulations following a four-year investigation.

Guardiola previously all-out defended City against criticism regarding allegations of financial irregularities. He also emphasized that he would leave the club if he found out that the club’s management had covered up a case against him.

What did Guardiola say about the accusations at Man City?

“Why do I defend the club and the people? It’s because I work with them,” he said in May 2022.

“When they are accused of doing something, I ask them: ‘Tell me about it.’ They explained and I believed them.”

“I said to them: ‘If you lie to me, the day after tomorrow I won’t be here. I’m leaving and I’m not going to be your friend anymore. I believe in you because I trust you 100% from day one and I defend the club because That.”

Not the first financial case

City were previously hit with a two-year suspension from the Champions League and a €30m (£25m/$33m) fine for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, but that penalty was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

But a similar appeal will not be possible this time around as Premier League rules mean City will not be able to take this latest case to CAS.

Guardiola and City are now watching to see what sanctions they could potentially face, and it is still unknown whether the manager will leave if there is a penalty imposed. Guardiola is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025.
