Union announced the extension without naming a term. According to kicker information, it should be a one-year extension to 2024 with a performance-based option for another year. Behrens’ previous contract would have expired at the end of the current season.

“I feel very comfortable at Union, which shows on the pitch. Both the coach and the team make me feel important to the team, so I didn’t have to think long about my extension. I want the path continue with Union and I’m convinced that we still have a lot ahead of us,” Behrens is quoted as saying in his employer’s notice of completion.

“Robustness and header strength”

“Kevin’s extension is logical because of his performance and attitude. We are very pleased that he will continue to help us in the future with his physical strength and header power,” said Union managing director Oliver Ruhnert.

Behrens has been playing for the Köpenickers since 2021. Previously, he had impressively worked his way up through the German leagues. From the Bremen League (third team Werder Bremen) he landed at SV Wilhelmshaven in the regional league. Behrens spent a total of seven years in the fourth-highest German division before moving to SV Sandhausen in the second division at the age of 27. There he finally recommended for higher tasks and is now playing internationally at a more mature footballer age. The attacker celebrated his 32nd birthday on Friday.

Behrens has made 19 appearances this season (four goals, two assists), 13 of them as a substitute. In the 2-1 win against Mainz, which saw Union climb to the top of the Bundesliga at least temporarily, he scored the 1-0 lead on Saturday.
