Kaiserslautern frustration in Paderborn – Kiel celebrates

Dhe SC Paderborn can continue to dream of promotion to the Bundesliga after a late goal in the chasing duel. Coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 (0-0) and, at least for the time being, pushed 1. FC Heidenheim out of third place in the second division. For the climber from the Palatinate, the second defeat in a row meant a setback.

Jannis Heuer (78th) redeemed Paderborn with a strong free kick. Kaiserslautern had previously just missed the 1-0 – Terrence Boyd (68th) only hit the crossbar in a counterattack with a tackle.

Paderborn got off to a better start in an intense game, Julian Justvan (9th) missed the opportunity to make it 1-0 after a nice pass from Uwe Hünemeier when he was saved by FCK goalkeeper Andreas Luthe. Shortly thereafter, Marcel Hoffmeier and Marvin Pieringer (15th) missed a double chance.

Kaiserslautern allowed fewer goals as a result and scored goals themselves: Nicolai Rapp’s long-range shot (37′), which narrowly missed the Paderborn goal, became particularly dangerous.

In the second round the game remained open. Paderborn had more possession and pushed for the opening goal, FCK countered vehemently and mostly managed to keep the hosts away from the goal. On the counterattack, the guests remained dangerous – like Boyd’s crossbar shot.

Braunschweig slips further

Meanwhile, promoted Eintracht Braunschweig is slipping deeper and deeper into the fight against relegation. Lower Saxony lost 2-3 (0-2) against Holstein Kiel at the start of the 21st matchday and could fall back to a relegation zone after just one win in the last nine games at the weekend. The advantage over the relegation rank is only one point.

The outstanding jubilarian Fabian Reese (14th), Holmbert Fridjonsson (22nd) and Timo Becker (48th) secured the Kiel team their first second division win in Braunschweig with their goals. After two defeats in a row, the storks maintained their place in the front middle of the table. Substitute Maurice Multhaup (57th) and Danilo Wiebe (69th) shortened.

The hosts started extremely defensively in front of 18,747 spectators on Hamburger Straße. Reese, who played his 150th second division game, was instrumental in the visitors’ 2-0 lead. First, the former Schalke player converted a cross from Philipp Sander, then he hit a cross himself to Steven Skrzybski, who was denied by Eintracht goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic before Fridjonsson scored in the follow-up shot.

Only then did Braunschweig try offensive actions. Coach Michael Schiele made three changes after the break, but the shot initially backfired: After strong preliminary work from Reese, Becker made the supposed decision. But Eintracht fought back with two goals.
