Munich (ots)

As sovereign as champion Berlin acts in the BBL, in the EuroLeague ALBA loses the 6th game in a row – last! The Berliners conceded a bitter 60:93 against the table leader in their own hall. “We did a good job defensively in the second quarter, but not at all in the second half. The easy things we played up front didn’t fall in then. Then you get into a hole and Olympiakos punishes it brutally,” sums up Louis Olinde. In the EuroCup Hamburg lost against London with 66:83.

EuroLeague: ALBA Berlin – Olympiacos Piraeus 60:93

The Berliners are bottom of the table in the EuroLeague and receive the top of the table from Piraeus. The Greeks got off to a great start, won the 1st quarter 28:13 and temporarily led by 21 points. After the slow start, ALBA got into the game better and reduced to ten points at the break. In the second half, the current table positions were reflected in the result. Piraeus only allows ten points in the third quarter, almost deciding the game. In the last quarter, Piraeus confidently took the lead. For ALBA it is already the 6th defeat in a row in the EuroLeague. The playoffs are almost out of reach.

Louis Olinde, Berlin: “Piraeus is a very strong team, probably the best this year. They manage to play 40 minutes with 100 percent intensity. We did a good job defensively in the 2nd quarter but not at all in the 2nd half more. The easy things we played up front didn’t fall in anymore. Then you end up in a hole and Olympiacos punishes you brutally. We deserved to lose. We showed in the first leg that we can play on an equal footing with Piraeus . That didn’t work at all.”

Sasha Vezenkov, Piraeus, dedicates the victory to the victims of the Karaiskakis Stadium disaster in 1981 when 21 people died after a match between Olympiacos Piraeus and AEK Athens: “I want to dedicate the win to the families of the victims. This win is a credit to them. The key was the consistency we showed in the 1st and 3rd quarters. We kept ALBA to 60 points even though we didn’t have 40 minutes played with the same intensity in defence. I’m very happy with the win.”

The Hamburgers lose in the EuroCup against London and are in 8th place in the group. The Towers have only won one of the last ten games in all competitions. On Saturday, the BBL will face Bayreuth, bottom of the table.
