D1B: Standard comes a long way to Genk

A false start, but a good reaction: the young Liégeois avoided defeat before the playdowns.

There was one game left before the opening of the playoffs in D1B. Initially scheduled for January 20, the meeting between the Genk U23s and those of Standard had been postponed due to unpredictable weather, it was finally played this Sunday.

And the Genkois started this meeting with a bang, with a double from Victory Beniangba. Already a scorer at Virton last week, the Nigerian striker scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season in the first ten minutes of play.

The Ghalidi show, the reaction of the SL16

But the SL16 reacted in two stages. Brahim Ghalidi caused the penalty which allowed Aleksander Buksa to close the gap half an hour into the game, before scoring the equalizing goal ten minutes from time. The two teams punctuate their classic phase with a spectacular split (2-2).

Next weekend is the playdowns, therefore: the people of Liège will challenge Lommel on Friday evening, the Genkois will travel to Deinze on Saturday afternoon.
