Carousel around Vrána. Detroit wants to get rid of him

If there is a complicated situation surrounding any Czech player overseas, it is Jakub Vrána. We deliberately do not write that this is the NHL, as the Czech striker is currently working on a farm. But his fate is very uncertain.

Just to remind. Vrana came to Detroit in 2021 in a trade from Washington. Since then, he has played just 39 games. When he joined, he did fairly well.

But then came injuries and personal problems that resulted in absence during this season. A big comeback was expected, but it didn’t come. Since returning to hockey, Vrána has been working on the farm. However, he has been doing well there lately, which we reported on here.

From the logic of the matter, the idea that he could go back to the NHL is suggested. But the situation is not so simple. One of the obstacles is the salary cap, but the problem is somewhere else.

And the problem is bigger than the Crow would probably like. Information has come from overseas that is not at all positive for the Czech Republic.

“For those of you who are waiting for Jakub Vrány to be called back to the team, I have bad news. Sure, anything can change, but it looks like he won’t be playing for Detroit again. An exchange comes into play, or payment from the contract,” wrote journalist Nick Alberga.

And his colleague David Pagnotta added: “I heard the same thing. It is highly unlikely that Vrana would return to the Red Wings. Detroit wants to get rid of him, whether it’s a trade or a payoff.”

Finding a business partner will likely be very challenging for Detroit. Vrana was previously placed on the waiver list, from where any team could pick him up without having to send a consideration to the other side. Since no one has taken advantage of this option, it is unlikely that teams will change their minds.

However, paying out of the contract wouldn’t be much of a hurdle for the Red Wings. Vrán’s contract will have only one year left after this season at a salary of $5.25 million. If Detroit’s management was really determined to do so, any other team could subsequently sign Vrána.
