Status: 02/19/2023 8:05 p.m

Bayern Munich have won the top four for the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) Cup and clinched their first title in two years. The runners-up prevailed in the final with 90:78 (43:35) against hosts EWE Baskets Oldenburg. For Bayern it is the fourth cup win after 1968, 2018 and 2021.

“It feels great, we had a really great weekend. There are no two opinions that we deservedly won the cup.”said Bayern President Herbert Hainer on “MagentaSport”: “It was the first title, the second is still to come. The pressure releases positive energy, you could see that.”

Better throw rate at Bayern

The Munich team had dethroned defending champion Alba Berlin (83:77) in the semifinals on Saturday, while Oldenburg eliminated the MHP giants Ludwigsburg (92:86). A dream was shattered for the EWE Baskets, in 2015 the team had won the cup in their own hall, but the success could not be repeated.

Above all, the high rate of shots was the decisive factor in the fact that Munich were in the lead throughout the season and Oldenburg didn’t come close to winning. At Bayern, the game was themed “Wins for Rubit”. Augustine Rubit had to leave the floor injured in the semifinals and will probably miss FCB for months with a suspected Achilles tendon tear.

Russell cannot stop Munich

The top scorers in the final were Corey Walden and captain Vladimir Lucic, each with 18 points. Playmaker DeWayne Russell was hard to stop for the North Germans (28). But even this could not prevent the sovereign success of Munich.

The competition will be reformed for the new season, after a 14-year break, participants from the 2nd league will be back in the cup. The six best ProA clubs in the current main round are allowed to participate.
