Tennis fans didn’t really get their money’s worth in Dubai and Marseille yesterday, Thursday.

Yesterday, Thursday, was not a good one for tennis, regardless of whether you looked at the women or the men. The fans in Dubai were hit particularly hard. Because of four scheduled quarter-final matches, only two were held. Karolina Pliskova had signaled early on that she was ill and could not compete against Iga Swiatek. Well, like last week in Doha (Belinda Bencic had withdrawn there), the world number one benefited from a non-fighting entry into a semi-final.
The fact that Karolina Muchova had to miss the game against Jessica Pegula after Aryna Sabalenka’s surprising exit against Barbora Krejcikova due to an abdominal muscle injury is of course not a good service to the paying customers. Even if nothing can be done against the injury devil. But the bottom line: of at least eight and a maximum of twelve sets in Dubai, only five were played on the day of the quarter-finals.
Sinner says goodbye late
In Marseille, things looked better almost at the same time because the ATP Tour.250 tournament had only just arrived there in the round of 16 and therefore more matches were planned than in Dubai. But there, too, David Goffin signed off early, Mikael Ymer was the beneficiary. And in the late afternoon Jannik Sinner also withdrew, so late that not even a lucky loser could be found to play against Arthur Fils instead of the South Tyrolean.
So force majeure? Probably. Karolina Muchova has often been plagued by injuries, an illness like that of Pliskova or Sinner can always happen. At best, one could say that Jannik Sinner, who has played very successfully in Montpellier and Rotterdam for the past two weeks, might have thrown in the towel earlier. On the other hand, it speaks for the South Tyrolean that he tries everything to meet his obligations.
