Hamburger SV has come a step closer to the longed-for promotion to the Bundesliga. With a win at FC Hansa Rostock, HSV extended their lead to third place in the 2nd Bundesliga table.

Coach Tim Walter’s team won 2-0 (1-0) at FC Hansa Rostock on Sunday (February 5th, 2023) and is four points ahead of third-placed 1. FC Heidenheim. Ludovit Reis (40th minute) and András Németh scored the goals in added time.

After the tenth defeat of the season, the Rostockers are only two points ahead of a direct relegation zone.

HSV, who started with the same starting eleven as in the 4-2 win against Eintracht Braunschweig the week before, needed a bit to get into the game. In fact, he was lucky not to fall behind early on, as John Verhoek had a good chance in the third minute. But the Dutch centre-forward, who has scored just one goal this season, rushed the shot and shot so far over the goal.

It was the only good chance for FC Hansa before the break. The guests, on the other hand, improved after the sluggish initial phase and created good opportunities through Lean-Luc Dompé (16th) and Moritz Heyer (19th).

But it was Reis who scored the opening goal for Hamburg with a shot from about ten meters after several mistakes in the Rostock defense.

Kolke keeps Hansa in the game

The game got better in the second half. Hansa’s goalkeeper Markus Kolke saved Hansa from falling behind with two great saves. The defense of Dompé’s shot on the crossbar was spectacular, so Kolke was celebrated on the ground by two teammates.

Hansa’s coach Parick Glöckner then saw his team making decent attacking efforts. Twice the ball was even in the Hamburg goal, but both times the hit was previously disallowed due to an offside position. A yellow-red card for Damian Roßbach (80th) rounded off the bitter afternoon for FCH.

The fact that HSV still had to fear for their 13th win of the season in the final minutes was also due to Robert Glatzel, who missed a very good chance by heading wide of the right post from six meters (85′). Németh then redeemed the Hamburg fans with his first goal of the season after an exemplary counterattack.

HSV for the top game in Heidenheim

On Matchday 20, Hamburger SV is a guest at 1. FC Heidenheim (Saturday, February 11, 2023, 8:30 p.m.). Rostock is fighting for points in Bielefeld a day earlier (6.30 p.m.).
