Zizou Bergs for the 1st time on the Australian Open main draw: “Have to let it sink in” | Australian Open

“I have to let it sink in a bit,” says Zizou Bergs after qualifying for the main draw in Melbourne. “I think tonight I will have a fantastic feeling.”

“I came here with the aim of qualifying. When you reach that goal, it gives a lot of satisfaction. It is very nice to start my year this way.”

“It is difficult to say what I expect from it. I do not yet know who I will play against. My dream draw is Rafael Nadal. I am especially curious about this experience.”

Bergs also looks beyond the Australian Open. My goal is to be in the top 100 by Wimbledon and top 75 by the end of the year.

“In the preparation I have been working on many things so that I can get a better range to move better. Including footwork to turn around the forehand, moving in the returns, a more aggressive forehand, …”

“In addition, we are building on the qualities I already have. There are certainly still things that I will continue to work on, including my volleys. The work does not stop,” said Bergs, who beat Serbian Laslo Djere (ATP- 70) hits.

Greet Minnen got a match point at 5-4 in the 2nd set on the service of the Swiss Simona Waltert, but was unable to convert it. In the 3rd set Minnen’s spring was broken, after almost 3 hours she bowed her head. No 4th consecutive Australian Open for her.

Our country already has 5 representatives in the main draw in Melbourne: David Goffin (ATP-53) in the men’s, Elise Mertens (WTA-29), Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA-72), Maryna Zanevska (WTA-81) and Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA-95) among the women.
