World champion Laetitia Guapo is the figurehead of 3×3 basketball in her hometown of Clermont-Ferrand

Place de Jaude will be transformed into a 3×3 basketball court between June 9 and 11, 2023. The City of Clermont-Ferrand and Clermont Auvergne Métropole with the support of the Puy-de-Dôme basketball committee will organize a competition 3×3 basketball with two tournaments featuring national teams, 16 men and 12 women, representing the elite of the discipline, on the emblematic square of Clermont.

These two tournaments named “FIBA 3×3 CHALLENGER” for men and “STOP WOMEN’S SERIES” for women, correspond to the third highest level in the world, just behind the World Cup and the Olympic Games as well as the Masters.

The best European and world nations can participate with a view to garnering the maximum number of points to qualify for the Olympics. France hosts three tournaments of this level, in Clermont to start, then in Orléans and Bordeaux.

Promote 3×3 basketball in France

“The objective in organizing these tournaments here is to promote this practice of basketball to the general public and to make it a flagship event one year from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games”, announces Olivier Bianchi, mayor of Clermont-Ferrand and president of Clermont Auvergne Metropolis.

“The idea is to offer Clermont residents the opportunity to see the elite of this sport and to encourage the practice of it, as was the case with the development of 6 3×3 basketball courts at Phillippe-Marcombes”, continues- he.

To give this sport a spotlight, who better than Laetitia Guapo, international basketball player born in Clermont-Ferrand, elected player of the year 2022, to become an ambassador for the discipline and the city through this Clermont event from beginning of summer.

French champion and winner of the EuroCoupe with Bourges in 5×5 last year, but above all world and European champion in 3×3 basketball with the French team in 2022 and fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, the Clermontoise embodies marvel this role and will represent his hometown in these future competitions.

“I’m always very happy to talk about Clermont and Auvergne in general when I go to tournaments all over the world,” says Laetitia Guapo.

By signing a partnership agreement on January 26 at the City Hall of Clermont-Ferrand, the municipality undertakes to allow him to improve his training conditions for a period of three years with an aid of €10,000 per year. .

As French women’s 3×3 basketball is not yet recognized at the professional level, this support constitutes recognition of this emerging discipline emanating from urban sports, categorized as such during the Olympic Games.

“Playing on the Place de Jaude in June is a source of immense pride,” rejoices Laetitia Guapo. An event that the people of Clermont are now looking forward to!
