Union Berlin’s Julian Ryerson caused a stir over the past six months with his consistently good performances. Also at Borussia Dortmund, which now commits the Norwegian. BVB prevailed against international competition.
IUnion Berlin is fifth in the Bundesliga, one place and two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. In this respect, Julian Ryerson will initially deteriorate in terms of sport. Three days before the start of the Bundesliga, BVB struck again on the transfer market and signed the full-back from league rivals 1. FC Union Berlin.
As the sixth in the table announced, the 25-year-old has signed a contract with the Champions League participant until 2026. The clubs did not provide any information about the transfer fee. According to media reports, it should be in the amount of Ryerson’s release clause of five million euros.
“Thanks to his strong national and international performance at Union Berlin, there have recently been many interested parties from Germany and abroad who have asked for Julian. But when BVB knocked and the talks with Sebastian Kehl and Edin Terzic intensified, it quickly became clear to Julian that he wanted to take this step in winter,” Ryerson’s adviser Marijo Knez told the German Press Agency.
Ryerson’s contract would have expired
At Dortmund he could fill the gap left by Thomas Meunier’s injury at right-back. The 25-year-old can be used on both flanks and has shown strong performances for the Berliners this season. The contract of the 15-time Norwegian international in Berlin would have expired in the summer. Several media had previously reported on the impending change. Ryerson has played for Union since 2018 and made 109 appearances overall.
For the upcoming home game, Union coach Urs Fischer still has more options. The regular players Sheraldo Becker and Rani Khedira as well as Jamie Leweling, who had recently been absent due to illness, returned to training on Tuesday. In contrast to newcomer Jérôme Roussillon, the trio did not complete the full program. The midfield players Andras Schäfer (training after broken metatarsal) and Morten Thorsby (after stomach surgery) trained individually. Ryerson had already stopped training on Tuesday.
