The format of the “King of the Court” tournament is completely different from the usual order of play in beach volleyball tournaments. The competition begins with a group stage, followed by ten-team semi-finals and a five-team final.

In each of the phases of the tournament, the duos are divided into groups of five, and three have a place in the semi-final round. The pairs play a 15-minute match, in which the loser leaves the field. Opponents continue to play until they lose a hand. One side of the playing field is called the “King’s” side. The duo on this side take the serve, thus gaining a slight advantage. After 15 minutes, the scores of the pairs are tallied, and the lowest scorers do not advance to the next round.
