Serjogins and Caune set new Latvian records in Spain – Athletics – Sportacentrs.com

On the last day of the new year, street races have become very popular in the world, but especially in Europe. For the last few years, Marupian Dmitrijs Seryogins has also been participating in them with notable success. Also this year, three Latvian runners participated in the traditional “Cursa dels Nassos” race in Barcelona.

Dmitrijs Seryogins completed the 5 km distance in 14:20, which gave him 17th place in a strong team race, improving by two seconds the Latvian record achieved by Marek Florošek in 2007. The Ethiopian Adisu Girma won the victory with a time of 13:25, five seconds ahead of the host Ilias Fif, but six seconds ahead of third place winner Jonas Raes from Switzerland.

Let us remind you that Serjogin also owns the Latvian record for 10 km on the highway, which is exactly 29 minutes and was achieved this April in Barcelona, as well as the half-marathon record shared with Valerija Žolnorović – 1:04:43.

The start of the 18-year-old Valmieriite Agate Caunes in this distance was also very successful. Behind runners from Ethiopia, Germany, Norway and Kenya, the Wright Ravinska student finished fifth with a time of 15:44. In the women’s competition, the bronze medal winner of the world indoor championship in 3000 meters was won by Ethiopian Edzgayehu Taje (14:21).

The result (15:44) of Agate Caunes, the 4th place winner of the World Junior Championship in the 5000m, is a new Latvian record in both the junior (U20) and U23 groups. Caune improved by 16 seconds the personal record that was achieved in Mārupe in September.

It can only be added that the Latvian record in this 5 km distance belongs to Jeļena Prokopčukas and is only 14 seconds better (achieved in 2000). Caunei is also the junior and U23 record holder in the 10,000m, completing the distance this summer in 31:55.79.

Latvian Championship medalist Kitija Valtere also took part in the 10 km race, finishing in 18th place with a score of 37:12.
