Scott Rolen: Cooperstown’s New Immortal

The Temple of the Immortals in Cooperstown has a new member: Scott Rolen.

This Tuesday the results of the voting of the Baseball Writers Association of North America (BBWAA) for the period 2022-2023 were announced.

The only one who met the minimum requirements (exceeding 75% of the votes) was Scott Rolen, who played 17 MLB seasons among the Phillies, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Reds.

The former third baseman got 76.3% of the votes on the BBWAA ballots.

Scott Rolen finished his career with a .281 average, 316 home runs, 1,287 RBIs and 118 stolen bases. Won eight Gold Gloves at third base, a silver bat (2002) and was called to seven All-Star Games.

On July 23, he will be inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame along with Fred McGriff, elected last month by the Committee on the Modern Era.

Venezuelans will remain on the ballot

Omar Vizquel, Bob Abreu and Francisco “El Kid” Rodríguez, who was in his first year of election, managed to exceed the minimum 5% required to stay on the ballot for at least one more year.

Vizquel, who in 2020 on his third opportunity made Venezuela dream by gathering 52.6% of the votes, added only 19.5% on this occasion.

For his part, Abreu appeared in 60 ballots for 15.4% and “El Kid” Rodríguez -with 42 votes- obtained 10.8%.
