Everything really went wrong this season!
FC Schalke 04 was relegated from the Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season without a hitch. Suspended players, a total of five coaches, the break with their own fans and just a measly 16 points. That was Schalke’s horror record.
In the new focus episode of “Stammplatz”, the daily football podcast from BILD, ex-Schalke reporter Kilian Gaffrey tells some unbelievable stories from that time. Schalke fans will only shake their heads.
Gaffrey reveals: “Nabil Bentaleb was called to the office on his birthday. I know from several conversations with those around him that he firmly assumed that Schalke wanted to wish him a happy birthday. Instead he was suspended. Apparently for no apparent reason. Bentaleb thought there was a hidden camera.”
That’s probably what Schalke fans often thought during this horror season. But this messed-up football year really existed.
