Again and again Gillian Roberts had to endure the torment – for a whole year again and again. At almost every New York Yankees game, her boss Jeffrey Brienza (49) raped the police officer at the US baseball team’s stadium. Police Captain Brienza has been in jail since October and has now been released from service.

New York police officer didn’t know how to defend herself

Gillian Roberts had worked in the New York boroughs of Long Island and Queens for more than 20 years before taking up her duties at Yankee Stadium in March 2020, reports the New York Post. Brienza gave her preferential treatment from the start and gave her “excessive attention,” the police officer said in her statement. That’s why she felt uncomfortable and literally “trapped”, but didn’t know what to do about it.

Police captain forced colleague to have sex in toilet

The first attack is said to have happened at the end of a shift in June 2020. According to the police officer, she went to the toilet, where Brienza forced her to have sex. In the period that followed, the policeman became “even more possessive” and raped her “almost every matchday”. Even if the Yankees didn’t have a game, Brienza arranged everything so that both were on duty at the same time. Gillian Roberts reported that he threatened to destroy her career if she told anyone about the assault.

New York: Police officers made fun of their colleague

The police captain is said to have ordered Roberts to stop at certain points on the way home. There he got into her car and forced her to have oral sex, the policewoman said. Colleagues didn’t seem to help her – on the contrary: Many would have called her “Captain’s Girl” and made fun of her instead of protecting her, Roberts said.

When she rejected his advances, Brienza reportedly reacted aggressively and abused his power as a manager by giving her unpopular tasks. Finally, in September 2021, Roberts reported the abuse to the police, who launched an investigation. At the end of November 2021, Gillian Roberts left the service early, although she had originally planned to continue working.

NYPD fires captain accused of rape

Brienza was arrested in October 2022 after pleading guilty to six charges including discrimination and unauthorized database searches. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) released the 49-year-old last week.

The authority did not say whether the termination was related to the rape allegation. Gillian Roberts’ attorney Fred Lichtmacher, however, told the New York Post: “I can’t imagine that this had nothing to do with my client’s case.” It was reassuring “that the NYPD is doing the right thing when one of the… doesn’t do the right thing for you”.
