For those who want to rediscover the atmosphere of the Great War, there is the Ables military road which, immersed in larch and pine forests, retraces the inventiveness of the military genius and the industriousness of the local population, involved in this exemplary engineering work which was indispensable for the conquest of Monte Cristallo.
Finally, a taste of the Bormio 360 Adventure Trail, the high-altitude itinerary that completes a 360° tour above the Bormio area, to be covered on foot or by e-bike and mountain bike.

Walk to the Bagni Park

Enclosed in the Stelvio National Park, on the southern slope of Mount Reit, the monumental park of Bagni di Bormio represents a surprising walk with free access to enjoy a particular nature, favored by a unique microclimate. The route reveals traces of the history of the Bagni di Bormio: the spa, known since medieval times, was a holiday destination for the Central European upper class and for the Austrian imperial aristocracy during the Belle Époque and which, today, attracts visitors from Worldwide.

From the Hotel Bagni Nuovi, you can access a lush forest of pines, larches, firs, gembri, mountain pines and heather, which is also home to various species of Mediterranean flora. Following the path you come across the Cassiodora waterfall, one of the nine sources of thermal water and you access a panoramic point. Continuing in the direction of Bagni Vecchi, you reach Fonte Pliniana. Continuing the path, you arrive at the San Carlo Source and access the Bagni Vecchi, dating back to the 12th century. From here you can dominate from above (1420 meters above sea level) the entire Magnifica Terra with the large Bormio basin.
Returning towards the Bagni Nuovi, you finally come across the Sasso Garibaldi and the “S” shaped basins.

From Canareglia to Solaz, passing through the Ablés military road

The Ablés military road is an enchanting itinerary, immersed in larch and pine woods. During spring it is possible to walk about 4 km of it on a path that goes from Canareglia to Solaz di Sopra, reaching 2000 m above sea level. From this area you can enjoy a particular sunny exposure and there are numerous panoramic points: looking at the bottom of the valley you can admire Bormio and Valfurva; turning our gaze towards the peaks, however, we find the majesty of Vallecetta, with Bormio 3000 on one side, and Gran Zebrù on the Val Zebrù side.

In late summer, with the mountain clear of snow, the fittest hikers can go, if they want, up to the Ablés pass and thus travel all 17 kilometers of the longest military road in the Alps. The road was built during the First World War as it was the shortest and most convenient passage that connected the Italian defenses of Valfurva and Val Zebrù with the Stelvio area. In fact, all the Italian offensives aimed at conquering Monte Cristallo started from the Ablés Pass.

The “sentiero de li strìa”, a taste of Bormio 360

The route that goes from Mondadizza to Scala Piana, in the municipality of Sondalo, is part of the Bormio 360 Adventure Trail ring route: the high-altitude itinerary that completes a 360° tour above the Bormio area, to be enjoyed on foot or by e-bike and mountain bike. The path offers some of the most beautiful views in the area, capable of compensating for the effort of the climb. This segment of Bormio 360, surrounded by a suggestive alpine atmosphere, is called “Sentiero de li strìa” as it still retains a mysterious charm linked to ancient legends of witchcraft and arcane facts.

It is said, in fact, that at the sound of the Ave Maria, a series of burning embers could be seen leaving from the town of Scala heading towards the hamlets of Mondadizza, Le Prese, Frontale and Fumero: they were the witches who abandoned the sabbat, retreating at first light of dawn.
