Olympic Stadium: towards an NFL game in Montreal?

The Olympic Stadium has acquired a new artificial pitch certified “FIFA Quality Pro”, which could help it attract new major events, including potentially an NFL match.

It is on this ground that CF Montreal began its training camp in the last few days.

“It’s the only ‘FIFA Quality Pro’ field in Quebec and one of five in Canada,” said Olympic Stadium spokesperson Cédric Essiminy. We are the largest stadium in the country at [s’en] endow.”

The installation of this new surface cost nearly $700,000, but managers believe that the changes are worth it, as they could allow the holding of new large-scale events at the Olympic Stadium.

“We are canvassing with the NFL to obtain one of the international matches,” shared the vice-president of operations and commercial development of the Olympic Park, Alain Larochelle.

In the plans

Last February, the NFL’s international chief operating officer, Damani Leech, confirmed to the “Journal de Québec” that Montreal was indeed in the plans for the Goodell circuit.

“Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are certainly markets that we have watched and will continue to study. The Canadian market is really important for us and geographically, it is less complex than for many other countries. Like everywhere else, we need the right infrastructure and the right partners,” he said.

The Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks were also part of the formations wishing to evolve on the other side of the border.

The NFL regularly holds games outside of the United States. In 2022, three games were played in London, one in Mexico City and another in Munich, Germany.

Tests to ensure safety

The pitch has been subjected to several quality tests to meet the most stringent FIFA criteria, which ensures players a safe playing environment.

According to sports therapist Julie Bertrand, it is essential to offer high-level athletes a comfortable and safe playing surface to avoid injuries.

“It can make a big difference for an athlete, especially if he depends on his body for his career,” she explained.

The inauguration of this new field will take place on March 18, when CF Montreal will host the Philadelphia Union for its first home game of the season.
