FRISCO, Texas – Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of dallas cowboysonce again offered a vote of confidence to Mike McCarthy.
Questioned on Tuesday on the airwaves of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas whether a defeat against the Buccaneers de Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs on Monday night could impact McCarthy’s status as head coach, Jones was adamant.
” No. I don’t even want… No. No. That’s all,” he replied. “I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses. I have a lot more than that playoff game to rate Mike McCarthy. »
The last head coach to lead the Cowboys to the playoffs two seasons in a row was Chan Gailey in the 1998-99 season. He was fired following the team’s 27-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the first round. In two years at the helm of the team, he showed an 18-14 record.
Jones called the decision to part ways with Gailey so quickly a mistake.
Immediately after last year’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Jones seemed to leave open the possibility of a change. He later said, however, that he was doing this in part to keep defensive coordinator Dan Quinn with the team, as he interviewed for a number of head coaching positions.
The Denver Broncos have requested permission to speak to Quinn for the second year in a row.
“I can’t tell you how much confidence I have in Mike and our coaching staff,” Jones said. “They know all the nuances. They understand all the frailties that we could have or that we could show on Sunday [lors de la défaite contre Washington]. [,,,] I have complete confidence in this team of coaches. He is exceptional. We have a great chance to go there and be successful. »
McCarthy, who has two more years left on his contract, has led the Cowboys to back-to-back 12-5 records in the past two seasons and an NFC East Division title in 2021. It’s the first time since 1994-95 the Cowboys have had two straight 12-win seasons.
