Friday night, Golden State chained the baskets against the helpless San Antonio Spurs. Victory 113-144 for Steve Kerr’s men. But in Texas, it’s not just the score that’s amazing. The number of spectators was also dizzying. A record was even broken!

This unprecedented attendance for a regular season game did not happen by chance. The leaders of the Spurs had made it a goal, which is why, for one game, the Texans had left their usual AT&T Arena in favor of the gigantic Alamodome.

68,323 fans made the trip

Located in the city of San Antonio, this indoor stadium usually hosts the UTSA Roadrunners college American football team. Maximum capacity of the lair, around 70,000 seats, or 52,000 seats more than the usual Spurs room. It was still necessary that the faithful of the franchise of San Antonio answer the call…

It was done! Very precisely 68,323 souls massed in the Alamodome, beating the previous record of 62,046 spectators for a regular season game in the NBA. Established during a match between the Bulls of Michael Jordan and the Hawks of the Congolese Dikembe Mutombo, this mark dates from 1998.

If fans responded in droves to the appeal of the ‘Coach Pop’ driven franchise, it’s because of the poster’s appeal – Golden State is the defending champ – as well as a component nostalgic. Indeed, the Alamodome is the former home of the Spurs. They even won the first title in their history there in 1999.

Note that the attendance record for a game that is not part of the regular season is 108,000. It was established during the 2010 All-Star Game.
