Marrit Steenbergen named Sportsperson of the Year

Swimmer Marrit Steenbergen has been named Athlete of the Year at the Eindhoven Sport Awards. She thus stayed ahead of two competitors, former PSV player Cody Gakpo and swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjodjo.

The presentation of the awards was Monday evening in DomusDela.

After winning four gold and one bronze medal at the European Championships in Rome, Steenbergen put himself back on the map. Before that, she struggled with physical and mental problems for years. She decided to change trainers who let her set clear goals.

Dance troupe The Ruggeds take home the title for best team. They have been working for years and were featured in Justin Bieber’s video clip. The group won the World Championship in Japan in 2022 and toured the country with their own theater show.

Former tennis player Paul Haarhuis took home the oeuvre prize. For years he was on the court with his tennis partner Jacco Eltingh. He won two world championships, two sports team awards and the Tennis Europe Award. The talent award went to 15-year-old Flora Wang. With her passion for badminton, she won the gold medal at the European Under-17 Championship in Austria.

All winners received a medal during the ceremony. For the election, people from Eindhoven could nominate athletes and ultimately compile a top three. A professional jury consisting of; Tiny Sanders, Annamarie Thomas, Robert van der Horst and Jac Rooijmans eventually named the winners.
