The Indonesian national team was branded as provoked by Doan Van Hau until they finally lost to Vietnam in the semifinals of the 2022 AFF Cup. The Garuda team players were considered to be unprofessional.

Indonesia failed to reach the 2022 AFF Cup final, after being defeated by Vietnam in the semifinals. After a 0-0 draw at Senayan, Shin Tae-yong’s troops lost 0-2 at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, Monday (9/1/2023).

In the semifinals, Indonesia was said to be disturbed by Doan Van Hau’s actions. The Vietnamese defender succeeded in playing hard, thus provoking the emotions of opposing players.

In the first leg, Doan Van Hau’s hard tackle made the Indonesian players emotional because they escaped a card penalty. This situation was mentioned by coach Shin Tae-yong on his social media.

Then when playing in Hanoi, the 23-year-old defender played hard again. A yellow card was given to Doan Van Hau, but the Indonesian players still seemed unsatisfied.

Several times, players such as Marc Klok and Ricky Kambuaya got emotional with Doan Van Hau. This condition made Indonesia labeled only focused and distracted by the opponent’s defenders, instead of Vietnam as a team.

Responding to this, former Thailand coach Steven Darby commented on it. He considered the Indonesian players to look unprofessional if they were really bothered by Doan Van Hau’s actions.

“If Indonesian players lose focus just because of Van Hau, that proves they lack professionalism,” he said, reported by VN Express.

“At international level, players must focus on doing their job well, not being distracted by opponents. Players must control what they can control, namely individual performance,” he said.
