Because of the corona pandemic, the 2021 Small States Games in Andorra were postponed to 2025 and thus effectively cancelled. After four years of waiting, the games of the small European states will take place again in Malta in 2023. In just under half a year, the opening ceremony on the Mediterranean island will be celebrated on Monday, May 29th.

This means that there is not much time left for the final preparations for the games. The LOC took this as an opportunity to gather the team bosses from the various associations on Monday, January 9th in Triesenberg and to inform them about the status of the preparatory work. Among other things, the sporting selection conditions, the medical care on site and the accommodation situation were discussed.

Not represented in any team sport

The LOC expects to have one of the smallest teams to have ever traveled to the Small States Games. “As of today, we assume that around 30 athletes will be selected for the GSSE 2023,” says Head of Mission Beat Wachter. The Liechtenstein athletes are expected to play in the following sports: athletics, judo, sailing, shooting, squash and tennis. For the first time in a long time, Liechtenstein will not be represented in any team sport.

The preparation will be intensified in the coming weeks. Milestones on the way to Malta include the preparation event for all participants in April and the end of the selection period: the athletes have until April 30th to meet their performance guidelines. The LOC competitive sports committee then decides on the nomination applications from the associations. (PD)

The next Small States Games will take place in Malta from May 28th to June 3rd. There was a break of four years due to Corona.
