Mbaye Leye has never really been discussed at Zulte Waregem, while the entire right column has already changed trainers. Now that he received an enormous quality injection with Christian Brüls and Ruud Vormer, operation rescue seems to have finally started.
With Brüls he has a midfielder who can do just about anything, but who has never really played high. “I think a lot has to do with his personality. I know Christian,” he says in HLN. “I don’t care if he sometimes dares to light a cigarette or drink something. We all have our flaws. We all do things that shouldn’t be. What counts for me is how Christian trains and what he brings during a match. Guess who ran the most kilometers against KV Mechelen?”
Such a player is allowed a little more from Leye. “Once on the field, I expect every player to go all out. Brüls still does that at the age of 34. While nowadays you have boys of 23 who, after barely two good matches, no longer make the efforts they used to. That doesn’t work for me. You have to keep your feet on the ground.”
The same goes for Shaper. “Everything stands or falls with someone’s character. The day after Mechelen, the boys who had played were allowed to go to the wellness. Guess who didn’t like that? Ruud Vormer. He came to my desk to say that he would rather walk a bit .”
