LEAGUE CUP – Newcastle and Manchester United one step away from the final

Manchester United and Newcastle are just one game away from the League Cup final. The Magpies, 3rd in the Premier League but released on Saturday in the 32nd final of the Cup by a 3rd division club, Sheffield Wednesday (2-1), owed their fans revenge. In a lively Saint James’ Park, they tormented Leicester (13th) from the start, creating a good half-dozen clear chances in the first 25 minutes. They ended up finding the fault with Dan Burn (1-0, 60th) and Joelinton (2-0, 72nd), who had found the post just after returning from the locker room (46th).

For their part, the Red Devils, who fell Charlton (3-0), with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford on the bench at kick-off and without Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial, absent from the group, opened the score on a superb curled left shot from Antony (21st). The Brazilian was replaced on the hour mark by Rashford who scored twice (2-0, 90th and 3-0, 90+4).

The other two quarters, Wednesday, will offer a duel between poorly ranked in the Premier League – Wolverhampton (19th) receives Nottingham Forest (15th) – while the red lantern, Southampton, will receive Manchester City.
