The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) released the latest world rankings at the end of December, and Japan maintained its top spot in men’s baseball.

Second place is Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), third place is the United States, which won the international tournament of “WBSC U-12”, fourth place is South Korea, and fifth place is Mexico.

Japan, nicknamed “Samurai Japan,” has won the World Baseball Classic (WBC) twice. He boasts a brilliant record in international competitions, including winning a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The world ranking is a point conversion of the four-year results of the national teams from U-12 to the top level in world competitions sanctioned by the WBSC. The latest edition reflects the achievements of 2019-2022.

The ranking transition of major baseball powerhouse countries/regions is as shown in the chart below. Japan has held the top spot for eight consecutive years since 2014.

In baseball, in addition to the international competitions sponsored by WBSC, the WBC sponsored by the World Baseball Classic Inc. (WBCI) formed by the Major League Baseball (MLB) Organization and the MLB Players Association is well known. It has been held four times since 2006, and Japan has won the first and second times in a row.

The 5th WBC will finally be held in March 2023. National teams from 20 countries and regions around the world will participate, and preliminary rounds will be held first in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.

The world ranking of women’s baseball announced at the end of December 2021 is as shown in the figure below, and Japan also maintains the number one position. The latest version is expected to be updated in 2023, according to the WBSC.
