“I have great faith in this team”

herthabsc.com: Did you still have time to switch off a bit around Christmas and New Year’s Eve and think about other things?
Christensen: I was with my family and friends the whole time in Denmark. That was important to me. It doesn’t happen that often anymore that I manage to drive home. It was nice to recharge the batteries. After two weeks, however, I was really looking forward to Hertha, the team and Berlin. It’s a good sign when you miss your colleagues, right? (grins)

herthabsc.com: And certainly also your goalkeeper team, in which you are now the oldest at 23 years old.
Christensen: That’s right, I was actually always the youngest goalkeeper. We train well together and the mood is great too. The mentality fits. Maybe I have to show more passion in this role and go ahead, the young goalkeepers might orientate themselves a bit more towards me. Of course everyone gets angry when they make a mistake, but then it’s more my responsibility – primarily Andreas Menger’s, of course, but also me. We have a good dynamic in the group, it’s give and take.

herthabsc.com: Between the World Cup, home leave and America: were you able to review the past year at Hertha? After all, you have a difficult spring behind you, a debut in the relegation and the jump to number 1.
Christensen: Yes! The first four months were really really difficult – characterized by injuries and illness. In addition, we didn’t work as a team in terms of football. I will never forget the relegation. That was just madness, pure emotions. We were all so incredibly happy after the final whistle. After that, a lot of things worked out for me: the development at Hertha or the appointment to the national team. I was also grateful for many things that I achieved on New Year’s Eve 2021, but I really learned a lot in the past year. I always have to keep at it, even if some things don’t work. The fun must not be neglected either.
