“I come out stronger from this defeat”

A week after suffering the very first loss of his career, Kim Clavel’s pain is still raw.

The boxer does not yet feel ready to watch her fight against Mexican Yesica Nery Plata (29-2, 3 KOs), who won by unanimous decision of the judges in Laval, last Friday, thus stripping Clavel (16-1, 3 KOs) of his WBC world title.

Seven days later, the Quebecer assured the TVA Sports program JiCFriday, that she learned from this confrontation and that she will come back stronger. Watch the full interview in the video above.

“I go out with my head held high. I gave it my all in the ring. In the end, women’s boxing won again. I come out of this fight stronger. I will take a step back and come back stronger,” said Clavel.

She admitted that the past week has been emotionally taxing.

“I felt ashamed, but you shouldn’t hide your emotions, you have the right to be sad. My last defeat was in 2016 at the amateur level. Since Friday, I have been asking myself questions, which will make me evolve. All boxers have already lost. The important thing is to get up,” philosophized Clavel.

According to her, the result is partly explained by her defensive shortcomings. “I have to be better defensively to have a long career,” she admitted.

Clavel also believes she got carried away by the energy of the crowd.

“Doing a show has taken over the importance of winning. I fought not to lose and not to win. I should have entered the ring for myself and not for the fans. With all that, I forgot to have fun.”

This love of the public touches her deeply. “I feel the enthusiasm of people for me. I’ve had such an outpouring of love since my defeat. I’m surfing on it right now.”
