Fireworks at Antwerp: Frey completely settles accounts with Janssen

Last summer, Antwerp FC wanted to sell him, but not now. Michael Frey is fed up with his bench seat status and that is why he wants to leave the Great Old as soon as possible. The Swiss plays much more than last season, but nevertheless he is still one of the best strikers in the Jupiler Pro League in various areas. His numbers are even more impressive than in the previous season. And even better than his major competitor Vincent Janssen.

JANSSEN’S DOUBLE

After 19 matches in the competition, Michael Frey comes into action for 553 minutes at Antwerp FC. On the same match day in the previous season, the Swiss already had 1,448 playing minutes for the Great Old. His remarkable sporting devaluation is the result of the arrival of Vincent Janssen, who is the unadulterated Antwerp attack leader under Mark van Bommel. The Dutchman makes a greater contribution to the teamwork, but on the other hand, Frey is still one of the most efficient and fastest scoring strikers in the Jupiler Pro League.

FREY SCORES FAST THAN JANSSEN

Michael Frey has scored 7 goals in 14 league matches this season, and divided over his number of playing minutes, the Swiss has an excellently high goal average. He scores 1.04 goals per 90 minutes, which is more than one goal per full match. In the Belgian competition, only Paul Onuachu (KRC Genk, 1.17) has an even better frequency. Mario Gonzalez (Oud-Heverlee Leuven, 0.84) Vincent Janssen (Antwerp FC, 0.69) and Gianni Bruno (Sint-Truiden, 0.67) complete the top five.

With his crazy average of 1.04 goals per game, Michael Frey is also doing remarkably better in that part compared to the previous season. Then he managed 0.70 goal per 90 minutes, which is also a very high average. In the current year, the Swiss therefore scores no less than 49% faster than last year. That is very impressive for a striker who has ended up in the back of the Bosuil against his will, and very striking because his competitor Vincent Janssen scores much less smoothly than him.

FREY IS MORE EFFICIENT AND WINS MORE DUELS THAN JANSSEN

Michael Frey is also one of the most efficient strikers on Belgian territory. Mario Gonzalez (Oud-Heverlee Leuven, 47%) and Paul Onuachu (KRC Genk, 40%) need the least number of chances to score a goal, but Frey is still in a very nice third place with a high ratio of 36 %. Felipe Avenatti (KV Kortrijk, 33%) and Marius Mouandilmadji (RFC Seraing, 31%) are currently the fourth and fifth most efficient strikers in the Jupiler Pro League. We find Vincent Janssen in thirteenth place. The Dutchman converts 23% of his chances into a goal.

Michael Frey is also even more efficient compared to last season when he was 29% efficient in front of goal. In addition, the 25-year-old is also stronger in the duels than Vincent Janssen, because the Swiss wins more duels per match than his major competitor at Antwerp FC. We can therefore understand that Frey thinks he is entitled to more playing minutes at the Great Old, because in terms of goal regularity, efficiency in front of goal and duels won, he clearly has an edge over Janssen.

LUXURY PROBLEM AT ANTWERP

Antwerp FC realizes all too well that such a profile as that of Michael Frey can be crucial in the further course of the competition, so that the club is not prepared to let their hard-working, efficient and smoothly scoring striker go just like that. Mark van Bommel also clearly has plans with his (for the time being?) second striker. “Michael is dissatisfied. That is every football player when he is not playing. Every footballer is full of emotion and that was Michael’s expression. But I don’t think it was his last match for the club. When you have two strikers like ours, you don’t want them to leave. So I don’t want him to leave. Moreover, he still has a contract here (until mid-2024, ed.). We’ll figure it out together. We will solve it in a good way”, said van Bommel on Friday at the press conference for the top match against Union SG.
