Pieter de Waard will step down as general manager and chairman of the board of Telstar on 1 July. De Waard has worked for the club from the Kitchen Champion Division since October 2006, making it the longest-serving chairman in professional football.
After seventeen years, 62-year-old De Waard thinks it is time for a new interpretation of his life. “There must be something going on, others think,” De Waard said in a statement on Friday. “And that is true. I am tired of it. I am tired of doubting whether my added value can continue. Doubting my expiration date. Doubting whether I am the right person to take the club even further.
“But what weighs most heavily is that I want to free myself from the enormous responsibility that I feel, day in and day out, when it comes to the well-being of our club,” he continued. Feeling care for seventeen seasons, and therefore functioning too often on the edge, I don’t want it anymore.”
As a Telstar director, De Waard stood out because of his colorful appearance and special statements in the media. In 2019 he applied to become chairman of the KNVB. In the end, Just Spee succeeded Michael van Praag.
‘Don’t get in the way in any way’
Telstar could never reach the Eredivisie under De Waard’s rule. Since 2006, the club from Velsen-Zuid has almost always ended in the right row of the Eerste Divisie. Telstar’s supervisory board will be looking for a successor for De Waard in the coming period, who will not interfere in that process.
“The club will undoubtedly change under the leadership of the next director, just as it was different after my start. I don’t want to get in the way of the new person with final responsibility. I don’t want to experience the possible changes up close, not in the way I don’t even want to load that suspicion. Staying away, especially in the beginning, is therefore the best, for the new director, for the club and also for me. “
Telstar climbed to tenth place in the competition on Friday with a 1-0 win over Young AZ. Glynor Plet scored the only goal early in the game.
