Change to Bayern? Summer decision made

Yann Sommer has been dominating the headlines in the Bundesliga for weeks. Will the goalkeeper from Borussia Mönchengladbach switch to Bayern this winter? This question was obviously answered on Saturday.

The Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus publicly ruled out for the first time that the club from the Lower Rhine will part with its top performer between the posts in the current 2022/2023 season.

“We will not give up Yann Sommer. We told Bayern that too,” Virkus was quoted as saying by the “Rheinische Post”.

An unmistakable statement from the Gladbach squad planner, who had indicated several times in advance that he wanted to continue to work hard for the Swiss national goalkeeper.

Change to FC Bayern in January?

Yann Sommer’s working paper in Gladbach expires at the end of the season. If the club and player can no longer agree on an extension, the 34-year-old could even move to Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

The German record champions definitely want to sign the goalkeeper in January after the protracted injury of regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, as Sommer has been considered one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga for years.

Yann Sommer has been playing in Gladbach since 2014

According to the clear Virkus statement, however, this will not happen. A day earlier, Gladbach’s head coach Daniel Farke had made his stance on the matter publicly clear: “Yann knows my opinion. And Yann is experienced enough to deal with such speculation, he trains highly professionally every day.”

As the newspaper report goes on to say, it should never have been the intention of those responsible for the Fohlenelf to transfer Sommer to FC Bayern, although speculation about an impending million-dollar deal has recently been circulating.

Only an “immoral offer” in an exorbitant amount could now cause a rethink in Gladbach, the “Rheinische Post” reported further.

As one of the longest-serving professionals in the squad, Yann Sommer has been playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach since 2014 and has appeared for VfL 272 times in the Bundesliga alone.
