For a long time Sjors Ultee was on his way with SC Cambuur to a victory over his old club Fortuna Sittard, but fifteen minutes before the end a remarkable penalty turn resulted in the equalizer from Limburg.

Then things went completely wrong for the home team and Cambuur was denied a late penalty kick. Fortune won 2-1.

On August 20 last year, Cambuur won 1-4 at Fortuna. Two days later, Ultee was fired as trainer of the Limburg club. Since Ultee’s dismissal, Fortuna has risen from seventeenth to twelveth place in the premier league under the leadership of Spaniard Julio Velázquez.

Cambuur ahead

Following a nice rush from captain Alex Bangura, Daniël van Kaam crossed and Mees Hoedemakers shot in. Until the 75th minute, Hoedemakers, who was injured in the second half, seemed to be the match winner.

Cambuur trainer Ultee about VAR intervention: ‘Crucial decision’

When Burak Yilmaz went down in the Cambuur penalty area, referee Jeroen Manschot waved away the Limburg call for a penalty kick. A minute later, the referee put the ball on the spot for Cambuur after an alleged foul by Rodrigo Guth on Mitchel Paulissen. In addition, he gave the Fortuna defender a red card.

VAR intervenes, penalty kick Fortuna

It seemed like liberation for Cambuur, but the VAR intervened. Cambuur defender Doke Schmidt had indeed committed a foul on Yilmaz and Manschot also saw that on the images on the side. It was a penalty kick for Fortuna and no red for Guth.

Burak Yilmaz celebrates his goal

You can leave it to Yilmaz to take a penalty kick. The 37-year-old Turk shot exactly in the corner, although keeper Robbin Ruiter was still close. It was Fortuna’s fourth penalty kick in four consecutive matches. Yilmaz hit four times. In total, the Turk has already used six penalties this season.

The Frisian grapes became even more sour: on a pass from Tijjani Noslin, Córdoba tapped into the 1-2. Then a goal by Fortuna substitute Thomas Buitink was rejected and Yilmaz hit the crossbar.

Cambuur kept hoping and the reward seemed to come in injury time. After Cambuur substitute Remco Balk was hit by Fortuna keeper Ivor Pandur, Manschot gave another penalty kick. Again, however, the VAR called the referee off and again the referee reversed his decision. No penalty, no draw for Ultee.
